If you’re heading to the Sunderland Empire, here’s some of the best-placed restaurants in the city for pre-theatre dining that are all a stone’s throw away from the venue, or a couple of minutes walk. Places fill up fast, however, so it’s best to book ahead where possible.
5. Koji, corner of Church Lane
For ramen, noodles, fried chicken and bao buns head to Koji which has opened in the former No 2 Church Lane site. It's relatively new so check its socials for opening times. Walk ins only for now.
6. The Botanist, Keel Square
Head to the new Botanist in Keel Square for pre-theatre hanging kebabs, chicken katsu curry, vegan bang bang noodle salad, prawn linguine, roasted seabass and more. It's open seven days a week.
7. Keel Tavern, Keel Square.
For a pre-theatre pie and pint, head to the new Keel Tavern in Keel Square. Open daily for lunch onwards, it's got a menu of hearty pub classics, such as bangers and mash, fish and chips and a whole range of pies.
