Public health boss confirms no cases Indian coronavirus variant found in Sunderland, but warns people not to let guard down

UK cases of the new strain of coronavirus more than doubled last week from 520 cases to 1,313.
The Indian variant is one of four variants designated as ‘of concern’ by UK authorities, as well as those which emerged from Kent, South Africa and Brazil.

Hide AdPrime Minister Boris Johnson said today, Tuesday, May 18, there was no “conclusive” evidence to deviate from the Government’s road map out of lockdown.
Step four of the easing of regulations is due to go ahead on June 21.
There has been speculation the Government could reintroduce local lockdowns in a bid to slow down the spread of the new variant in particular hotspots.
Gerry Taylor, Executive Director of Public Health and Integrated Commissioning, at Sunderland City Council, said the city had seen no reports of the new variant, but care was needed to keep it that way.

Hide Ad“While we have no reported cases of the Indian variant in Sunderland at present, this a fast evolving situation so it’s really important that people remain on their guard and continue to follow the guidance that’s in place to keep everyone safe,” she said.
“That means following the latest guidance, remembering hands, face, space and fresh air, getting both doses of the vaccine when you’re offered them and helping find people who might be carrying Covid without knowing it by making regular testing part of our lives.
"This is even more important as we get out and about more and mix in larger numbers such as at organised events."
