Ryhope residents get into Christmas spirit at lights switch-on
The Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Alan Emerson, led the big switch-on of the lights, which were funded by residents.
Members of residents’ group Ryhope Community Spirit raised more than £1,000 to buy a tree before fundraising for new decorations.

She said: “I was really happy with how it went.
“There was such a great turnout, despite the fact we couldn’t put lights on our real tree, because it’s still just a baby.
“Next year, it’s going to be an even bigger and better event.
“Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and we’re going to work even harder over the next 12 months to secure the funds we need to make it even better.”
There was a visit from Santa Claus and his sleigh, as well as stalls, a tombola, live music from Miss Lola Dee, hot and cold food, classic cars and 4x4s.
