But if the season began today, what would the Black Cats’ best starting line-up be?
We asked that question on our @sunechosafc Twitter account, and had hundreds of votes from supporters.
And while there are undoubtedly some more signings to add into the mix, fans picked an impressive squad.
So as chosen by the Black Cats’ faithful, here’s Sunderland’s strongest starting line-up as things stand.
1. GK: Lee Burge
Burge looks set to start the season as Sunderland's number one, having impressed as Jon McLaughlin's deputy last season. But it remains to be seen what calibre of goalkeeper Phil Parkinson will sign to challenge Burge - which could change who fans are backing to start between the sticks. Photo: FRANK REID
2. CB: Bailey Wright
Sunderland supporters voted heavily for Wright to start as part of the back three, having been impressed with how the Australian helped to shore up the Black Cats' backline during his loan spell with the club last season. Photo: Frank Reid
3. CB: Jordan Willis
Similarly to Wright, Willis was backed by a strong number of fans in our poll - and it's no surprise, given his performances in the 2019/20 season. Photo: Frank Reid
4. CB: Tom Flanagan
Flanagan was backed to start ahead of youngster Brandon Taylor but, with Parkinson keen to add another defender to his ranks, that verdict may well change before September 12. Photo: JPI Media
